Dancing, in simple terms, can be defined as, “moving our body according to music in a rhythmical way.” We can get the rhythmical action by using our feet, knees, hips, chest, shoulders, hands, fingers, head, eyes, etc. However, the condition is that we have to move our body by following the music. Dancing styles can be categorized based on the number of interacting dancers, which are mainly: solo dance, partner dance and group dance. Dances are performed for various purposes such as Ceremonial Dane, Competitive Dance, Performance Dance, Cultural Dance, Social Dance etc.
Social Dancing means different types of solo, partner and group dances performed at social events. Social events mean “an occasion organized for entertainment.” The purpose of social dancing is mainly the self-enjoyment of one another. They don’t perform the dance either to the audience or to compete with one another. Their main focus is enjoyment by dancing.
There are so many social dancing styles around the world. As an example: Jive, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Night Club Two Step, Waltz, Hip Pop, Free Style…. Some dances can be used for several purposes. Cha-Cha, Jive, Rumba, can be used for competitions, as a Latin American dance and also as a ‘performance dance’ by performing on a stage. Even though Salsa, Bachata are generally recognized as Social dances, sometimes we use those for competitions too. Likewise if there is a dance which we can enjoy by dancing at social events as solo, partner or group dance, it is a social dance. Many social dances are partner dances.
